Why hire a coach ?

Why Should I Hire a Triathlon Coach?

Whether you’re striving to become a first-time triathlete, are looking to try longer distance events, or are hoping to stand on a podium of a local race or Ironman event, it’s always a good idea to hire a triathlon coach.

Hiring the right coach for you can make the world of difference, and help guide you through the plethora of triathlon questions that frequent the minds of triathletes.

A triathlon coach will develop a training plan that is unique to you, and adjust it over time based on your progress. They’ll work with you to improve your swim, bike and run.  A coach will make sure you’re well versed in the rules of triathlon (no drafting) and will set up race simulations so you can practice.  They’ll walk you through the challenging choices of choosing the right gear and stress the importance of bike fit.  They’ll help you understand the essential role of nutrition throughout your training and on race day.  They’ll make sure you know when to work hard and when to ease back to recover and prevent injury.  A good coach will also schedule your training program to fit in with your work-life schedule.  In the end, they’ll also work with you to develop your race day plan to optimize all the hard training that you’ve put in.

The right coach will be by your side to take the stress out of triathlon so that you can focus on being the best you can be.  And of course, the right coach will help you enjoy the journey and get you hooked into a lifetime of fitness and well-being!

How to choose the right triathlon coach for you:

Choosing the right triathlon coach should be similar to a business interview.  Schedule some time to sit down to have the following two-way dialogue:

 Ask your potential coach:

 -       Do they have proper coaching credentials as well as experience.  What makes them certified to be your coach?

-       Do they have references from other athletes they have coached?  Are you able to speak directly with some of the athletes?

-       Ask about their coaching style (not every coach works for every athlete).

-       Ask if they offer tri camps, race simulations, and training sessions with other athletes.

-       How will training programs be set and monitored?

-       What will communication between you look like?
